Rule change explanations
Sat Apr 29, 2006 11:01PM
I've had a number of emails asking about the changes in the rules for 2006. I'll just answer them here for everyone.
#1 The fuel volume rule for the Monster Truck class.
The 175cc volume for the .21 and larger engines are based on the LST tank from last year. The LST's didn't have trouble making run time with that volume last year. The MGT made run time fine ( 7 minutes) with only 150cc of fuel and a .27 engine. The 220cc tank that is in the LST2 was added so the backyard bashers could run longer without refueling NOT for the racers. There are two options for making the LST2 legal either put the LST1 tank in or add a filler to reduce the volume to the legal limit.
Most RC vehicles are built for the non racers since that is the largest part of our hobby so not everything the manufacturers put in a vehicle should or will be legal for the racing organizations.
#2 The rule about transmissions being required in the Monster Truck class. Monster truck racers are very inventive and as such have come up with many mods to this type of truck. This is a two sided sword at times. It's great to see things evolve but at times that evolution can scare people away from a class. I was able to witness some of this last year traveling to all the RC Pro events. I feel to help this class florish we need to stay closer to the stock configuration of these trucks for example keeping the transmission. Why not have a mod and stock class? At this time we don't have the turnout to justify splitting the class. That would further reduce the entry count for the class.
#3 Why did you change the engine size definitions? Until this year no manufacturer made anything between .18 and .21. Traxxas did and I'm sure more will follow. We had two choices on what to do with this new engine size. ONE was to make it run with the heavier weight like the .21 and up vehicles. At first this made sense BUT it would have also allowed it to run with more fuel which could probably give it a big advantage. Choice TWO was to make it run at the smaller fuel volume. Based on the information we had at the time the 3.3 is not as fuel efficient as the 2.5 so even though it should have more power than the smaller motors it probably won't get the run time they do which should even it out.
I'll always welcome contructive criticism and questions, HOWEVER emails that start with "How stupid are you?" or "Has Traxxas bought the series?" generally won't do anything but irritate me. I do everything possible to make things as equal as possible but there are more things that figure into a rules decision sometimes than may be visible on the surface as hopefully you have seen from some of the explanations above. The Monster Truck class is the toughest class to make rules for because there are so many different types of trucks in one class and they are constantly evolving. I don't feel it's our responsibility to make sure each truck runs the same time on a tank of fuel. If that is something we should regulate then the easy way to do that would be to make a spec class with the same motor and tank, which knowing monster truck guys no one wants. The racer has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each truck and make his/her decision on which one they feel fits their needs. If you want the power of a big block then you can have that but you will probably get less fuel economy than you will with a small block but it's your choice. The Monster Truck class is the only one that allows the racers to have that choice.
1/10 and Arena Truck Class Changes
Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:35PM
Due to the low turnout of 1/10 in 2005 in particular 1/10 Intermediate RC Pro has after much consideration elected to combine the Intermediate and Expert 1/10 classes for 2006. This will mean only one 1/10 class.
I'm sure most racers have noticed that Arena Truck has had the largest influx of new racers in the last year and because of this we will introduce an Intermediate Arena Truck class for 2006. Check the updated rules for 2006 for who can and can't run in this class.
The rules have been updated for 2006. The main rule addition is the fuel volume rule for all classes. All changes or additions have been marked in red.
Finals with the Metro Center
Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:35PM
You'll notice the Finals is listed as tentative. I'm currently working with the Metro Center in Rockford Illinois to host the finals. Our normal date for the finals of the 2nd weekend of November is the weekend we're planning for. I'm talking to manufacturers and the magazines about doing a trade show in conjunction with the 2006 finals. Stay tuned for updates on this. Link for the Metro Center
Backing Plate Colors for 2006
Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:33PM
The backing plate colors for 2006 will be the same as in 2005. The Midwest will keep the white that the North had. The Northeast is the new divison and it will be orange. The top 10 in National points in each class will have special number plates. Like last year the backing for them will be Blue but the numbers will be yellow this year. The Intermediate classes will have these number plates as well. Since the majority of the top finishers in Intermediate will be bumping up to the expert classes their plates will have an (I) following the number to differentiate them from the top 10 in the expert classes. More info on the numbers can be found HERE. I need the top 10 in the buggy and monster truck classes to email Wayne some info so we can have the number plates made and at your first event. We need to know whether you run a wing or not and what brand that wing is. Email Wayne HERE.
2006 Race Schedule
Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:32PM
After many changes to avoid other races the 2006 schedule is done. I tried to not conflict with the majority of the major races in each division which caused a major delay. I still managed to come up with a conflict for the West round 1 that date has been changed.
You'll notice a few changes from 2005. The Northern Division is now the Midwest. That's what the racers requested......
There is a new Northeast Division.
I had originally intended on adding two more divisions but that semed to many at once and I was afraid the good turnouts we had last year it would be seriously diluted. I do plan on expanding again in 2007.
