Cabin Fever - 2008 Northwest Rd 1

Last weekend was the 1st race of the 2008 season and it was held in the Northwest. Yes it was indoor! It was in the 30’s most of the weekend with a lot of nasty white stuff all over the ground but the racers still came out!

Hosted by the RC Car Club of Lewiston (RCCCL) at the indoor arena of the Lewiston Roundup. I arrived Wednesday night to find probably 8 of the club members at the arena ready to start building the track. Wednesday night consisted of laying out the track area and starting to erect the drivers stand. Thursday started at 8am scraping dirt from the surface to start building jumps. The Rick McCrery track design under went the normal minor changes when transferred from paper to dirt but by 10pm we were basically done and ready for racing to start. All during the day racers were arriving along with club director Dwayne Lindler’s phone going off with calls for directions and weather reports.

Friday started early with practice starting at 9am. Continuous reports of various major passes closed on the routes to Lewiston. Some of the Canadian racers drove 14 hours along with the Montana racers taking 12 hours for a normal 4 hour trip. By the end of the day 80% of the racers signed up were there and practicing. The track was coming in nicely and looking like it would groove. Practice closed a little after 9pm.

Saturday practice for those who didn’t practice on Friday started at 7am. The heats started at 9am. Two rounds were ran before the resort, after that we ran the remaining 2 rounds before the end of the day. The mains were set for Sunday with Ryan Cavalieri holding TQ in the Expert Buggy class, Gary Guest was TQ in Expert Arena Truck, Lee Hackney as TQ in Intermediate Buggy, Jon Gilbert took TQ in Intermediate Arena Truck, Mike Hudson grabbed TQ in 1/10 Truck and Richard Tunnell drove the short bus to TQ in the Monster Truck class. This race had an Exhibition class with the CRT.5 the TQ was Dan Kaiser.

Sunday started with an 8:30 drivers meeting and racing started at 9.

CRT .5
A Main. Dan broke in warmup and didn’t make the start but joined in about 10 laps down. Ryan McCrery took the lead and never looked back just like he did in the 2 qualifiers he ran. Ron Anderson fell into 2nd and held it throughout the race. Shane Madden and Jamie Mahr battled for the 3rd spot with Shane taking it followed by Jamie in 4th. Dan Kaiser was able to come back for a 5th place finish followed by Casey Searls, Travis Evans and Mikel Lofgren.

1/10 Truck
A Main. This class had the most no shows because of the weather. The TQ Mike Hudson had a problem at the start and chased Chris Bridgewater. Chris led from the beginning and Mike settled into 4th after the breakage. In 2nd was Gary Crowell driving the only electric truck in the field. Not bad after a 72 second pit stop to change batteries at the halway mark. Flynt Nash took home 3rd. In 5th was Preston Malek followed by Shane Evans, Nick O’Conner and Kevin Major to round out the field.

Monster Truck
B Main. Jim Baddman and Travis Evans took the bump up to the A Main.
A Main. Richard Tunnell battled with Craig Hamilton and Roy Pitchlynn throughout the race with Craig breaking just before the midway mark it was up to Roy to take it away from Richard. We joked with Richard during all his races about the body ha had on his truck which was a yellow school buss body which he painetd “The Short Bus” on the side of. So Richard drove the short bus to the win! Roy Pitchlynn took home 2nd followed by Baddman in 3rd and Ron Anderson holding onto 4th with a broken truck.. Jeff Martizia brought home 5th followed by Jamie Mahr, James Russell, Jone Gilbert, Craig Hamilton, Travis Evans, JR Clark and Christopher DeWinter in 12th.

Intermediate Arena Truck

C Main. Dean Hartwig and Aaron Mourning to the bumps.

B Main. Jeff Mills and Eddie Martin took the bump ups to the A.

A Main. TQ Jon Gilbert didn’t make the start for this main. Chris Stavros jumped out to the early lead which started to look like he would hold it for the win but problems arose and dropped him back to 6th by the end of the race. David Mills took the win followed by Neil LaPalm, Mathew Evans, Billy Hazard and Chris. In 7th was Preston Malek followed by Jeff Mills, Aaron Sullivan, James Russell, Lee Hackney and Jon Gilbert.

Expert Arena Truck.

C Main. Jeff Martizi and RC Geiss took the bumps to the B.

B Main. Chad May and Richard Infanti bumped to the A Main.

A Main. The TQ Gary Guest took the lead from the beginning and held off a few attempts to take it away in the first 4 laps but gradually pulled away to finish unchallenged on his own lap. Marcus Anzivino worked his way into 2nd early and stayed less than a lap away from Gary through most of the race finally going a lap down close to the end. Tyler Vik took home 3rd after a hard charge from his 7th starting spot followed by Ryan McCrery in 4th, Taylor Peterson in 5th, Randy Nolen in 6th, Rick McCrery in 7th, Richard Tunnell in 8th, Shane Pregshat in 9th, Richard Infanti in 10th, Chad May in 11th and Ross Carter in 12th.

Intermediate Buggy.

C Main. Rod Gatewood and Aaron Mourning took the bump spots.

B Main. Albert Vieth and Ryan Brechbill took the bumps to the A Main.

A Main. TQ Lee Hackney led the way battling numerous challenges by Billy Hazard, Gary Crowell and others. Finally late in the race Billy Hazard took the lead and Lee finished in 2nd followed by Gary Crowell, Chris Stavros and David Mills in 5th. Neil LaPalm took home 6th followed by Eddie Martin, Jeremy Olsen, Albert Vieth and Ryan Brechbill in 10th. Allison Tunnell in her 1st 30 minute main finished in 11th followed by Aaron Sullivan.

Expert Buggy.

D Main. Bump ups were Scott Sugahiro and Gary Mathews.

C Main. Bump ups were Jim Mann and Kevin Major.

B Main. Bump ups were Ross Carter and Richard Tunnell.

A Main. The A started with Ryan Cavalieri and Taylor Peterson nose to wing and pulling away from everyone else. These two swapped positions numerous times throughout the first ¾ of the race. Finally Ryan was able to get some space on Taylor late in the race after Taylor had some unscheduled pit stops. Tyler Vik moved into 3rd late in the race after starting 10th. Richard Tunnell took over 4th with only a couple laps to go after starting 12th. Randy Nolen finished 5th followed by Gary Guest. Gary and Chris Bridgewater had a spirited battle through most of the race until Gary lost a wheel. After that Chris lost a servo and left the race. Gary came back and was looking to finish a few spots higher until his receiver battery died leaving him with a 6th place followed by Bridgewater in 7th, Ryan McCrery in 8th, Marcus Anzivino in 9th, Mike Hudson in 10th, Ross Carter in 11th and Rick McCrery in 12th.

All the bad weather included this event turned out to be very well received by the racers we talked to during the event. I want to thank Dwayne “Dude” Lindler and the rest of the RCCCL guys which I will not attempt to name because I don’t know all of them for all the hard work involved in putting on this event. GREAT JOB GUYS! Hopefully we can do this as an RC Pro event next year. Please put in an order for better weather now so maybe we can do away with all the snow next year.

Thanks to all the racers from Oregon, Washington, California, Montana, Canada and Idaho who made a super effort to get there!
